About this tool
Render each visible PDF page as a grayscale JPEG image and place it on a new sheet of the same physical size. The source cropping, rotation and UserUnit are respected. Supported form appearances become page pixels, while PDFs with other annotations are rejected. The output does not retain selectable text, links, attachments or accessibility structure, and may be larger than the source. Choose 1×, 1.25×, 1.5× or 2× detail and JPEG quality; missing font, CMap or image-decoder resources stop processing instead of publishing incomplete pages.
Scenario Recipes
Create a grayscale review copy
Goal: Keep page dimensions while checking whether raster detail is sufficient.
- Load a PDF with no unsupported annotations and start at 1.5× detail.
- Create the grayscale copy; lower detail or split pages if the pixel budget is exceeded.
- Download and inspect Chinese text, small labels and colored diagrams in another reader.
Result: A checked image PDF with the searchable original retained.
Failure Clinic (Common Pitfalls)
Colored lines become indistinguishable
Cause: Different colors can map to similar gray values.
Fix: Review diagrams and keep a color copy when color encodes meaning.
The process reports a missing resource
Cause: A needed font, CMap or decoder could not load.
Fix: Check the connection and retry; do not use an incomplete substitute output.

Does grayscale keep selectable text?
No. Output pages contain JPEG images. Keep the original when searchable text or accessibility structure is needed.
Does a higher scale change paper size?
No. It changes pixel detail only. Physical output size follows the displayed source page.
What are the image output limits?
At most 40 pages, 8,192 pixels per side, 16 million pixels per page, 80 million pixels total and 80 MiB of output.
What happens to forms and annotations?
Supported existing form appearances become pixels. Other annotations cause rejection so their visible content is not silently omitted.
Will it always reduce file size?
No. A vector or text PDF may grow substantially after rasterization. Compare the downloaded file before replacing the source.
What files are unsupported?
Encrypted PDFs, XFA and digital signature fields, including empty signature fields, are rejected. Inputs are limited to 50 MiB and 200 pages; grayscale output has a 40-page limit.
