Check Booklet Page Order: Eight Pages, Seven Pages, and Duplex Printing

Follow numbered PDF samples to verify booklet front/back pairs, a padded blank slot, reading direction, and the difference between PDF sides and paper sheets.

A PDF can have the expected page count and still contain the wrong content or order. Use the numbered samples in Booklet Maker to inspect the actual output before printing your document.

Tools in this guide

1. Start with the eight-page sample

Open Booklet Maker and select Try 8-page example. Leave A4 and Left to right selected. The preview shows sheet 1 front: 8 | 1; sheet 1 back: 2 | 7; sheet 2 front: 6 | 3; sheet 2 back: 4 | 5.

Create and download the booklet. Open all four output PDF pages and check the visible Page N of 8 labels against those pairs. Each PDF page is one printed side, so four sides correspond to two duplex sheets, not four sheets.

2. Confirm seven-page padding

Select Try 7-page padding example. The tool pads the reading sequence to eight slots by adding a blank at the end. The output is Blank | 1, 2 | 7, 6 | 3, 4 | 5.

The blank on the left of the first output side is intentional: it occupies the back-cover slot. Compare it with the eight-page example, where source page 8 occupies the same position. Do not remove that side or discard a source page to make the count divisible by four.

3. Match the binding direction

Changing Reading direction to Right to left swaps the left and right positions on every side. For eight pages, the first output pair is 1 | 8 and the second is 7 | 2.

Changing paper, direction, margin, or gutter clears the previous downloadable result. Generate again, then check that the new PDF matches the current preview; a filename alone does not confirm the chosen settings.

4. Print a small proof without imposing twice

The output is already arranged two source pages per landscape side. Print one PDF page per side. Disable a second Booklet or 2-up operation in the print dialog. Choose the output paper size, and use the preview to check any additional printer scaling.

For landscape duplex, start with a short-edge flip test. If the back is upside down, change the flip edge. Print the two sample sheets, nest them in sheet-number order, fold, and check pages 1 through 8. Feed direction and drivers differ, so this is a proof procedure, not a guarantee for every printer.

5. Prepare the source before a longer run

Reorder the source PDF before imposing. Source page positions, including existing blanks, determine the booklet order. Crop boxes and 90-degree rotations affect how page content fits inside each slot; inspect mixed-size pages in the downloaded file.

This tool creates one folded signature and does not calculate paper-thickness compensation. For a thick booklet, choose smaller source sections with your print provider first. Page embedding does not preserve live forms, annotations, bookmarks, or valid digital signatures as original document features.
